CG Jung and Psychological Types: A Plain-English Guide to the Theory Behind Insights Discovery

Carl Gustav Jung, commonly referred to as CG Jung, was one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. Born in Switzerland in 1875, Jung spent his career developing a body of psychological theory that remains foundational to contemporary personality psychology, organisational development and psychometric assessment. His contribution to what became the Insights Discovery® model is direct and central: the four Colour Energies, the eight types and the 72 type wheel positions are all built on the psychological types framework that CG Jung set out in his landmark 1921 work, Psychological Types.

CG Jung's Core Contribution: The Theory of Psychological Types

CG Jung proposed that human personality is organised around two fundamental dimensions. The first is attitude: the fundamental orientation of a person's psychic energy, either toward the outer world of people, events and action, which he called extraversion, or toward the inner world of ideas, reflection and subjective experience, which he called introversion. This is the dimension most people associate with Jung's name, though it is only one part of his full framework.

The second dimension involves four psychological functions: the mechanisms through which individuals engage with experience. CG Jung identified two rational functions, thinking and feeling, which he described as evaluative, in the sense that they allow individuals to judge and assess experience. He also identified two irrational functions, sensation and intuition, which he described as perceptive, in the sense that they allow individuals to take in and register experience without immediately evaluating it.

CG Jung argued that while every individual has access to all four functions, one function tends to be most developed and most consciously preferred, a second function provides supportive counterbalance and the remaining two functions are less developed and less consciously engaged. The pattern of this hierarchy, combined with the individual's attitudinal orientation toward extraversion or introversion, produces the characteristic psychological type: the consistent, observable pattern of how a person tends to perceive the world, make decisions and interact with others.

From CG Jung to the Insights Discovery Model

The path from CG Jung's Psychological Types to the Insights Discovery® four-colour model passes through the work of Jolande Jacobi, a Viennese psychologist and close colleague of Jung who published The Psychology of CG Jung in 1938. Jacobi's book translated Jung's dense and complex theoretical framework into a form accessible to a wider audience and it was this book that became the catalyst for Andi Lothian, founder of Insights Learning and Development, who recognised in the Jungian typology a framework with profound practical implications for organisational development.

The four Colour Energies of Insights Discovery® are the translation of CG Jung's framework into accessible, visual language:

  • Fiery Red Energy reflects the combination of extraversion and the thinking function: direct, decisive, results-oriented and action-focused

  • Sunshine Yellow Energy reflects the combination of extraversion and the feeling function: enthusiastic, sociable, people-focused and relationship-oriented

  • Earth Green Energy reflects the combination of introversion and the feeling function: caring, patient, values-driven and deeply attentive to the relational dimensions of experience

  • Cool Blue Energy reflects the combination of introversion and the thinking function: analytical, precise, quality-conscious and systematically thorough

The four-colour framework is the entry point, not the whole of it. CG Jung's eight psychological types, which emerge from combining each of the four functions with both the extraverted and introverted attitude, are reflected in the eight types of the Insights Discovery® model. These deepen further into the 72 wheel positions that give each individual's profile its specific and genuinely personal character. For a fuller explanation of how the wheel works and why it produces profiles that feel so accurate, the blog on Beyond the Profile: How the Insights Discovery 72-Type Wheel Actually Works provides the detail.

Why the Jungian Foundation Matters

The practical relevance of understanding CG Jung's contribution to Insights Discovery® is not academic. It matters for three specific reasons.

It grounds the tool in a century of validated science. Insights Discovery® is not a workplace personality quiz. It is a psychometric instrument built on more than a century of psychological research, validated by the University of Westminster and recognised by the British Psychological Society. The Jungian foundation is what gives the tool its credibility and what distinguishes it from the many colour-based personality tools that share a visual similarity but not a scientific rigour.

It explains why the profiles feel accurate. The reason the Insights Discovery® Personal Profile produces the recognition it consistently does, the sense of reading something that describes not just behaviour but the underlying why behind it, is that the model is measuring psychological preference at the structural level that CG Jung described, not surface behavioural style at the situational level.

It provides the foundation for lasting development. Because Insights Discovery® is built on a theory that explains why people behave as they do rather than simply describing what they do, it gives individuals the foundation for genuine and lasting development. Understanding that a preference for Cool Blue Energy is a Jungian orientation rather than a character flaw, and that Sunshine Yellow Energy in a colleague reflects a genuine extraverted feeling preference rather than superficiality, creates the conditions for the empathy, adaptability and growth that simpler frameworks cannot reach.

At HRC, we have delivered Insights Discovery® programs built on this Jungian foundation across India, the Asia Pacific region and globally as India's first and licensed legacy Insights distributor and partner since 1996. The blog on The Carl Jung Connection: How Jungian Psychology Underpins Insights Discovery explores the historical and theoretical depth of this connection in greater detail and the blog on What Are the Insights Colour Energies and Why Do They Matter at Work brings the practical application of CG Jung's theory to life in a working context.

If your organisation is looking to understand the science behind Insights Discovery® or to explore how the Jungian foundations of the model can support your development objectives, we would welcome a conversation.
