What Is the Insights Discovery Transformational Leadership Profile (IDTL) — and What Does It Reveal?

The Insights Discovery® Personal Profile is one of the most widely used tools for building self-awareness and improving interpersonal effectiveness in organisations around the world. The Insights Discovery® Transformational Leadership Profile, commonly known as the IDTL, takes the foundation that the Personal Profile provides and extends it into the specific domain of leadership: how a leader's unique combination of Colour Energies shapes the way they lead, what it enables naturally and what it requires of them in terms of deliberate development.

How the IDTL Differs from the Standard Personal Profile

The standard Insights Discovery® Personal Profile describes individual behavioural preferences in broad terms: how a person prefers to communicate, what they value, how they tend to engage with others and how they typically respond under pressure. It is a powerful tool for self-awareness and for improving working relationships across any role or level of an organisation.

The IDTL is built on the same foundational evaluator but applies the lens of leadership specifically. Where the Personal Profile asks: how do you prefer to behave, the IDTL asks: how do those preferences express themselves when you are in a leadership position and what does that mean for the people you lead?

The IDTL therefore provides a considerably more detailed account of leadership style, leadership strengths and leadership development edges than the Personal Profile alone delivers. It is designed for leaders who are ready to move from understanding themselves as individuals to understanding themselves specifically as leaders, with the precision that meaningful leadership development requires.

The Four Manifestations of Leadership

The IDTL is structured around four manifestations of leadership, each reflecting a distinct aspect of what effective leadership requires and each drawing on different dimensions of a leader's Colour Energy profile.

Results Leadership

Results Leadership reflects the capacity to drive performance, set clear direction, make decisions with confidence and hold oneself and others accountable for outcomes. Leaders who are strong in this manifestation bring pace, clarity and a results-orientation that keeps teams focused and moving. The development challenge for leaders who lead primarily from this place is to ensure that the drive for results does not come at the cost of the relationships and culture that sustain performance over time.

Visionary Leadership

Visionary Leadership reflects the capacity to think ahead, inspire others with a compelling picture of what is possible and sustain the enthusiasm and creative energy that moves organisations forward. Leaders strong in this manifestation are often the connective tissue of their teams, holding energy up and ensuring that people feel the work matters. The development challenge is to ground the vision in the practical realities of execution and to maintain momentum when the initial enthusiasm fades.

Relationship Leadership

Relationship Leadership reflects the capacity to build genuine connections, lead with empathy and create the psychological safety that allows teams to speak honestly and work together with depth and trust. Leaders strong in this manifestation are often those their teams trust most deeply, because they are genuinely interested in the people they lead rather than simply the output those people produce. The development challenge is to ensure that the commitment to relationships does not become an avoidance of the difficult conversations that healthy teams also require.

Centred Leadership

Centred Leadership reflects the capacity to lead from genuine self-awareness and clear values, maintaining effectiveness and integrity even under significant pressure. Leaders who are strong in this manifestation bring consistency and the quiet authority that comes from knowing who they are and why they lead the way they do. The development challenge is to ensure that the stability this manifestation provides does not become a resistance to the adaptation that changing circumstances require.

What the IDTL Reveals

The IDTL shows a leader how their personal Colour Energy profile expresses itself across each of the four manifestations.

The profile describes not only where a leader's natural strengths lie but where the less developed manifestations are creating gaps in their leadership impact and what the development pathway towards greater range looks like in practice. It surfaces the specific patterns, both good day and bad day, that shape how the leader is experienced by the people they lead, often revealing dynamics that the leader was aware of intuitively but had not previously had a precise framework to understand.

Who Uses the IDTL and When

The IDTL is most commonly used in the context of Leadership Development programs for senior leaders, high-potential talent and leadership teams. It is particularly valuable as the foundation for executive coaching engagements, providing both the coach and the leader with a detailed, validated picture of the leader's style from which to build the coaching conversation.

At HRC, we use the IDTL as part of our Leadership Development and Executive Coaching programs across India and the Asia Pacific region. As India's first and licensed legacy Insights partner since 1996, we have consistently found that leaders who engage with the depth of the IDTL develop their leadership range more purposefully and more sustainably than those working from generic leadership frameworks alone.

If your organisation is considering using the IDTL as part of a Leadership Development or Executive Coaching program, we would welcome a conversation about how to integrate it effectively.
